Wedding portraits on another day

Wedding portraits do not have to be photographed only during the wedding. A separate session makes sense when your preferred location is far away, the wedding schedule is already full or you do not want to leave your guests waiting. It is not automatically the best choice for every couple.

Portraits made during the wedding carry the energy of the real day. A separate date gives us more time, more control over the light and the freedom to choose a location without pressure. The right decision depends on what matters most to you.

When is a separate portrait session worth considering?

When the chosen location is far from the wedding

If the round trip takes an hour or more, it may be too high a price to pay during the wedding. Guests wait, dinner moves later and the couple spends a meaningful part of the day in a car.

Nikol and Norbert celebrated their wedding at Hotel Zlatý Kľúčik in Nitra, while we photographed their portraits at Schloss Hof in Austria on another day. This allowed us to use both locations without forcing them into one demanding schedule. You can see their complete wedding story.

When you want a particular light or season

A separate date allows us to choose the time according to the light and weather. This can help at locations with fixed opening hours, busy city streets or during summer, when soft light arrives late in the evening.

I can work with the conditions available on a wedding day. But if you have a very specific idea and do not want to build the whole celebration around it, a separate session is calmer.

When you do not want to leave your guests

Some couples want to spend as much of the reception as possible with family and friends. We can make a few portraits near the venue during the wedding and plan a longer session elsewhere later. The final gallery then includes both the real atmosphere of the day and a more considered portrait series.

When the timeline is already full

A late ceremony, distant venues and many scheduled events can make an hour of portraits feel stressful. A separate date should not be used to repair a completely unrealistic wedding timeline, though. Simplifying the day is usually the first step.

What are the advantages?

  • more time without guests waiting,
  • access to a location that would be too far away on the wedding day,
  • better control over the time of day and light,
  • an option to move the session in genuinely bad weather,
  • a calmer pace and time to use more than one part of a location.

The greatest advantage is not the number of photographs. It is the lack of pressure. You do not have to watch the clock and I do not have to choose between good light and returning in time for dinner.

What are the drawbacks?

You need to get ready again

Clothes, hair, makeup, flowers and travel can add time and cost. If you want to recreate the wedding look closely, include this in the decision.

The atmosphere is different

A separate session is calm, but it does not carry exactly the same emotion as the wedding day. I therefore do not recommend skipping all portraits during the wedding. Even 15 to 20 minutes on the day itself creates images that belong directly to its story.

Clothes can get dirty

Photographing in nature, a city or a historic estate involves movement and different surfaces. After the wedding this is usually less stressful than before the ceremony, but it still makes sense to protect the dress and shoes without becoming rigid in every photograph.

A separate session must fit the budget

Agree in advance on the price, coverage, travel, admission fees and delivery. A transparent proposal should make it clear what is included.

Is it better before or after the wedding?

After the wedding is usually easier. There is no risk of damaging clothes before the ceremony, and you already know what it feels like to work with your photographer. Do not wait too long if you want to keep a similar look, flowers or season.

A pre-wedding session can work if you want to use the portraits in the decor or a location is available only on a particular date. It requires more care with the clothes and logistics.

How much time should you allow?

The photography itself does not need a whole day. Around 60 to 90 minutes of shooting time is usually sensible, plus travel, parking and movement through the location. A large estate or several locations require more buffer.

More time does not automatically create better photographs. A shared idea, suitable light and a location where we can work without constant interruption matter more.

How should you choose the location?

A good location is not simply one that looks attractive online. I consider:

  • the direction and quality of light at the planned time,
  • access and parking,
  • permission or photography fees,
  • the number of visitors,
  • an alternative in case of rain,
  • time needed to move around the site,
  • whether the setting fits you and your clothes.

A historic palace, sand dunes, city streets or a meadow can all work beautifully. The location does not make the photograph on its own. It also needs to work logistically and feel right for the couple.

The compromise that often works best

If you are uncertain, combine a short session during the wedding with a separate session later. The wedding-day portraits retain the real context and emotion. The later session gives you access to a place that would otherwise be impractical.

Not every couple needs an additional date. When the venue has good light, the timeline has room and you do not want another round of preparations, portraits during the wedding are entirely enough.

Send me your wedding venue, approximate timeline and the portrait location you have in mind. I will tell you honestly whether travel during the wedding, a shorter nearby session or another date makes the most sense. View the current wedding collections or check availability.
