How to choose a wedding photographer: 7 questions

A portfolio may impress you and the price may fit your budget - but will you feel comfortable with this person throughout the wedding day? And can they photograph a dark church, family moments and a busy dance floor with the same consistency? These seven questions will help you look beyond a photographer’s best ten images.

1. Have you seen a complete wedding, not only the highlights?

Ask to see a full gallery from one wedding. It will show you whether the photographer can maintain quality throughout the day and notice emotion outside the portrait session.

2. Do you feel comfortable with them as a person?

If you cannot relax around your photographer, it may show in the photographs. A short call before booking often tells you more than another hour spent looking through a portfolio.

3. Is their style recognisable and consistent?

There is no single correct style. What matters is finding one that feels right for you and remains consistent in different light, locations and parts of the day.

4. How much wedding experience do they have?

Experience is not about boasting. It is the ability to stay calm when it rains, the ceremony runs late or the reception is darker than expected.

5. What is included and when will you receive the photographs?

Ask about coverage, the minimum number of photographs, delivery time, prints, travel and any additional costs. A professional photographer should explain these clearly before you sign.

6. Do they have backup equipment and a backup plan?

A professional works with backup cameras, stores photographs safely and has a plan for an emergency. You should not have to discover how this works on your wedding day.

7. What does the whole experience look like?

The way a photographer communicates before the wedding is a good indication of how the day itself will feel. You should know what happens next, what they need from you and when they will be in touch.

The right photographer is not only someone whose photographs you like. It is someone you can trust to notice what matters while letting you stay present with the people you love.
