What if it rains on your wedding day?

Rain does not ruin wedding photographs. The greater problem is usually a missing plan, unnecessary stress and the belief that all portraits must happen in one fixed hour at one fixed location.

After 16 years as a professional photographer, I know that we cannot control the weather, but we can prepare for it. A sensible alternative, a little buffer and a photographer who can work with interiors, low light and short breaks between showers are usually enough.

What should you prepare before the wedding?

Find a useful interior

When viewing a venue, look beyond the reception room and decor. Check corridors, staircases, covered terraces, the entrance hall and rooms with large windows. A simple space with good light is often enough for portraits. A luxurious room with no windows may be less useful than an ordinary bright corridor.

The photographer should know where it is possible to work without blocking staff and guests. Knowing the venue or reviewing its layout in advance makes decisions quicker on the day.

Add a buffer to the timeline

When every minute is occupied, a short improvement in the weather cannot be used. A 10 to 15 minute buffer between major parts of the day helps with rain, traffic, late guests and congratulations that take longer than expected.

Prepare a few practical items

A large neutral umbrella, spare shoes and a towel can be useful. Ask one person to help with the train of the dress while moving outside. There is no need to buy a collection of props. The goal is to move safely and remain comfortable.

Transparent umbrellas are visually discreet, but they are not essential. In strong wind or driving rain, a covered location is the better solution.

How can we make portraits in the rain?

Divide portraits into shorter sessions

All portraits do not need to happen in a single hour. Ten minutes after the ceremony, another fifteen before dinner and a short evening session can create a complete series together.

In changing weather, this is more practical than waiting for a perfect dry hour. I watch the light and the schedule and suggest a moment when it is worth stepping outside briefly.

Use covered outdoor spaces

Arcades, terraces, an estate entrance, a gateway or a roof overhang allow us to work outside without placing the couple directly in the rain. The surroundings remain part of the frame and soft overcast light can be excellent for portraits.

Work with a window and a simple background

One good window is often enough indoors. There is no need to move all the furniture or build a studio in the middle of the reception. The important steps are removing distracting objects from the background and giving the couple room to move naturally.

Use the rain deliberately when it is safe

Light rain, reflections on the ground and evening lights can create strong photographs. But there is no reason to make a couple uncomfortable only for one dramatic image. The session must remain safe and appropriate to the conditions.

What about an outdoor ceremony?

Every outdoor ceremony venue should have a clear wet-weather option. It is not enough to know that it can somehow move indoors. Find out:

  • exactly where the ceremony will take place if it rains,
  • how many guests fit comfortably,
  • where the daylight comes from,
  • what will be behind the couple,
  • when the final decision must be made,
  • who will communicate the decision to suppliers and guests.

The most difficult situation is waiting until the last moment without one responsible person. A clear decision time reduces stress and gives the venue, coordinator and photographer time to prepare the interior.

Should the whole schedule change because of the forecast?

A forecast several days ahead is useful for preparation, not panic. Conditions change and a local shower does not necessarily mean a full day of rain.

The day before the wedding, confirm three things: the ceremony location, the portrait alternative and the person who will coordinate any changes. Everything else can be adjusted on site.

If a severe storm is expected, safety comes first. Portraits move indoors, become shorter or can be completed on another date.

Are photographs worse under an overcast sky?

No. An overcast sky produces soft light without hard shadows and can be excellent for portraits in the right location. The atmosphere and colours are different, but the quality of the photograph is not lower.

A dark interior with mixed light sources can be more demanding. This is where experience matters - assessing the room quickly, choosing the right equipment and doing so without interrupting the wedding.

What should you avoid when it rains?

  • do not rely on one location with no covered alternative,
  • do not move the whole day every five minutes according to a weather app,
  • do not leave guests standing outside uncomfortably for a group photograph,
  • do not spend an hour travelling to another place where it may also rain,
  • do not ask everyone to make decisions at once - choose one contact person.

A simple plan B for wedding photographs

Before the wedding, agree with your photographer on:

  1. short portraits indoors or under cover,
  2. a place for family photographs,
  3. the possibility of using a 10 to 15 minute dry break,
  4. an evening alternative,
  5. a separate portrait date only if the weather allows no useful opportunity at all.

This plan is simple and does not take control of the day. Most weddings need only part of it.

How you feel matters more than the forecast

Your guests will not remember the millimetres of rainfall. They will remember the people, the atmosphere and how you experienced the day. The photographer should handle the light, space and equipment so you do not have to.

If you want to discuss a wet-weather option while planning, send me your date and venue. We can review the timeline, available interiors and realistic options nearby. View the current wedding collections or ask about your date.
